I often think that this is why the Americans (read: globalists) were so invested in the creation of the EU (EEA). They wanted to make sure that Russia was kept out at all costs. A Europe that included Russia would dwarf the American Empire very quickly, it would also not need China as its workshop.
Why yes, Russia is a more natural alley of the West. A subset of the West, however, possesses an irrational hatred of Russia.
