Preface
My opening line for this article was to have been: “So much water under the bridge these past four years.”
Then the phone call was leaked in which German military officials discussed blowing up the Crimea Bridge.
Writing during these times is to pin a moving target. Let the article gestate for another day and it will benefit, being less speculative, more grounded. Yet overnight the sky is lit by the explosion of new happenings — some more planned than random.
We citizens are the target, wherever we live, in this theatre of wars and spectres.
How is it that European politicians grandstand for war, just 10 years after they marked the outbreak of World War One”? It was sold as the “War to End Wars” — a slogan that roused the Gen Z of the day.
Nations once more make inter-locking security pacts that recall the build-up to WWI. These double and triple ententes were blamed for causing a regular border dispute to whorl into global conflict.
It was obvious on the centenary of the outbreak of WWI in 2014, from the narrow framing of the commemorations, that politicians were keen to avoid any discussion of how Europe tipped from prosperity and industrialisation into a bloodbath that sapped its wealth over two generations (since WWII was a continuation). This is still hidden from students today.
Nor did anyone ask why the populace was so keen for war in Aug 1914; how the propaganda of the Hun "bayoneting Belgian babies" goaded citizens to fury, declaring they'd give the Hun a "good hiding" and be home by Christmas.
You may recognise the propaganda.
Yet citizens march for peace in numbers not seen since the Iraq war in 2003. It is politicians who back war in SW Asia (Mid East) to the hilt and are increasingly vocal about war with Russia.
Past is prologue
Outwardly Europe’s leaders pretend they don’t want war with Russia, leaving it to defence ministers to tell the people to get on a war footing.
The French president Emmanuel Macron said boots on the ground in Ukraine was “not to be ruled out.”
He has shifted between peacemaker and warmonger, admitting there is no consensus for escalating war, but that France should not wait for the U.S. — striking a pose independent of Washington.
Macron was speaking as he hosted German chancellor Olaf Scholz, the UK foreign secretary David Cameron, the Polish president Andrzej Duda and the Dutch prime minister Mark Rutte. Relatively junior officials attended from the US and Canada.
Israel and Canada signed a bilateral security pact with Ukraine on Feb 24. That's after the UK, Germany, France and Denmark did the same. Sweden, Norway, The Netherlands and Belgium have indicated they're next.
Remember the Triple Entente before WWI, between France and Britain, and Britain and Russia. Germany, Austria-Hungary and Italy had the Triple Alliance. Or the British guarantee to Poland in 1939?
The unelected, undemocratic European Commission is expanding, which is its way of avoiding its internal contradictions, its financial crisis and looming insolvency. In Jun 2023 it proposed to absorb Ukraine and Moldova, which disputes with Russia the territory of Transnistria bordering Ukraine.
Macron told them Russia had placed its economy on a war footing, and that this "war economy" was part of Russia’s plan to invade Western Europe.
A sensible person might say that of course Russia has ramped up its weapons factories in order to supply its troops in Ukraine.
Macron called the reluctance to stack offensive weapons against Russia "shibboleths" and said restraints on long range missiles and jets had been cast aside.
“There is a change in Russia’s stance. It is striving to take on further territory and it has its eyes not just on Ukraine but on many other countries as well, so Russia is presenting a greater danger.”
Western politicians cannot use the word, war, enough. Canada is open to sending non-combat troops to Ukraine, Defence Minister Bill Blair says — are non-combatants troops without boots?
A Bridge Too Far
Unfortunately for those who seek to provoke Russia to attack outside the territory of The Ukraine, Russians seen to be listening in.
