How is the drift to war affected by the economic impact of social engineering?
Can we really hand off responsibility to technology or does it change our values?

Keeping up with events is like a dog chasing cars: once we catch up, on four legs or two, what do we do? Just chase the next one.
A week like this is rarely seen. Everything is in play:

South Korea's president and defence minister declare martial law
The depopulation of Gaza continues, especially in the north
France's government has fallen just days after Germany's — both had tried to ignore popular anger over war and austerity

Can we make sense of this or must we chase like dogs... who, of course, have a reason. Speeding objects unnerve them, just like the pace of events worries us.
No-one wants to be told they're not in control of events, or that "everything is a rich man's trick" or that we've been conned.
Yet eventually truth stares in our face and denial takes ever more effort.
We have been here before: inflation of the 1920s, accumulation by banks and pursuit of ever more, in part to lock wealth into real assets. The looming crash of markets, war to distract the masses abroad and austerity to control them at home.
A widening gulf between the way things are, and the way they should be — attracting populists to straddle the void and promise to build bridges and walls.
Self-described centrist parties cling to liberalism, not realising that it was traditional liberalism — in its economic and social versions — that got us into this mess.
Liberal excursion
Academics argue about the definition of liberalism but there is a line of descent from Whig mercantilism, the co-option of the state in pursuit of free trade: the naval power guards its economy behind tariffs, while forcing open the economic colonies.
In its modern formula — small-c financially conservative yet socially progressive — it might be reduced to: so long as it does not cost me my financial status, the state can throw open the gates to any people, activity or lifestyle.
Wealth inequality, endless money printing and hyper-financialisation enables the expansion of government and corporate power. This broke the link between the cost to an individual of another person's behaviour. By the same acid dissolved the government's accountability to the citizen.
The rich don't feel the cost, yet social engineering by corporations is "forcing behaviours" upon the masses.
There is a reason why the alumni of elite universities have made individual liberty the be-all and end-all.
See Rob Henderson's concept of luxury beliefs: ideas that confer status on the upper class while imposing costs on lower social classes.

Why war?
How does this relate to the drift to conflict?
Unconstrained freedom of action might mean a pride parade or any activity regardless of how it provokes or intrudes upon others: freedom without responsibility.
Unrestrained freedom of action for some, might mean wresting valuable resources from others by war, or impinging on property rights, including that which counts above all else: the integrity of one's body — think the "safe and effective."
War is the continuation of politics by other means. I've written about Carl von Clausewitz (1780-1831) and his arguments that war should benefit the people as well as the state.
In 5th Generation Warfare it no longer benefits the people because the domestic population is now the enemy.

Computer says 'no'
Governments are tearing up constitutional rights, unleashing the rule of the powerful, which in turn sets in motion technologies that inherently lack moral constraint.
The billionaire owners of cloud computing develop artificial intelligence (AI), hand-in-hand with government for the cybernetic control of society — from precrime to medical insurance — a logical step is to select candidates for "assisted dying."
If you complain, you may find yourself labelled as a “politically exposed person.”
