The dust has not yet settled from president Donald Trump's decision to conceal what the U.S. government knows about Jeffrey Epstein — more accurately, its insistence that there is nothing more to know. The row rumbles on in MAGA circles.

The implication is that Epstein was working for the Mossad, and that his British-French "girlfriend" Ghislaine Maxwell was his fixer and procurer for the purposes of blackmail and that too many people are compromised. [1]

However this obscures the real story behind Epstein and thus how governments are run, and in whose service.

Epstein's blackmail operation, as we'll see, is a small part of a bigger picture, and may even be a distraction. Maxwell and her family have older and deeper ties to intelligence.

The key is her father, Robert Maxwell. A Czech, born Jan Ludvik Hoch in 1923, who joined the British Army in WW2, won the Military Cross for charging a German machine gun nest, and later became a publishing tycoon and a British member of parliament.

Everyone knew Maxwell. He was a larger-than-life figure who would become a liability as his finances unravelled. Suddenly he was dead, which would be the biggest celebrity death until Princess Diana in 1997, in equally murky circumstances.

As a reporter at Sky News I interviewed his distraught sons, Kevin and Ian, in November 1991, and later had to spool through video of Maxwell's autopsy, searching for imagery that was fit to broadcast.

Press misdirection

Like the collapse of the Bank of Credit and Commerce International in July that same year, the news agencies like Reuters and Associated Press failed to tell the whole story.

Both were portrayed as human interest stories: BCCI as a crime against small shopkeepers of Pakistani origin who had lost their deposits; Maxwell as the looter of the Daily Mirror's pension fund, condemning retirees to poverty — the same story line, the theft of life savings.

In truth, each was linked to money laundering and arms trafficking by intelligence services, in particular with a U.S.-Israeli operation to transfer weapons to Iran, that became known as the Iran-Contra Affair.

Tracking Robert Maxwell, instead of Epstein, we gain a peak at the real power that shapes the world, where intelligence agencies meet oligarchs meet organised crime.

There is little evidence that Epstein's prime motivation was a blackmail ring. There is more than enough money to attract politicians, laundering cash between arms manufacturing, resource wars and land grabs, narcotics and human trafficking (the world's most liquid industries) to win their compliance without extorting them.

Blackmail probably did happen but the lure of riches is a more powerful tool. As with Sean "Diddy" Combs, the sex parties are the salacious gossip that distracts from the real power broking.

War child

Robert Maxwell was born of the chaos of war, a walking complexity of characters.

He typified “post-World War II diplomacy and espionage: the high-profile figure who is plausibly viewed as an agent, spy, or agent-of-influence simultaneously, of several governments in conflict with each other — particularly the United States, Great Britain, the Soviet Union and East bloc, and Israel — all of which know or suspect he is working for adversary intelligence services.

“The paradox of such as Maxwell, Armand Hammer, Henry Kissinger, Marc Rich, and the Bronfmans — of which intelligence service ultimately guided their actions — is usually resolved by selecting a country which seems to have benefitted the most from the agent’s activity. " [2]
