First, the headlines:
The Israel Defence Forces (IDF) says it destroyed over 320 “terror targets” across the Gaza Strip in the past 24 hours.
The USA is being dragged in. The Pentagon reassigns USS Dwight D. Eisenhower carrier strike group under CENTCOM; it could head to Persian Gulf or Red Sea following attacks on U.S. units in Syria and Iraq and from Yemen.
Putin deploys hypersonic missiles in range of USS Eisenhower, regardless of location.
The U.S. is concerned that advances in Russian technology have outsmarted its Patriot air defence systems. But that's all its got to defend U.S. bases in the Mid East, along with the newer Terminal High Altitude Area Defense (THAAD).
Not only Russian tech threatens practically every U.S. base in the region. The USS Carney shot down Yemeni drones unleashed by Houthi militia, underscoring how such technology can get into the hands of almost any group opposed to the U.S..
Gen Lloyd Austin said he's preparing to evacuate bases in Jordan, Syria and Iraq if protesters threaten to over run them.
The Sinai Foundation shared a video showing military traversing the city of Al-Arish en route to Rafah, gate to Gaza. Could Israel face an Egyptian front?
What’s happening?
Gaza is a real time lesson that war kills everyone — except the politicians, bankers and the war mongers who profit: People of every faith and none, multiple nationalities who cannot get out, regardless of the passport they hold, and the children.
This is what happened in World War Two and yet this war is being waged in the name of those whom we are told were WWII's principal victims.
That, right there, should make you stop and think, “wait a minute?” If WWII, 80 years ago, led to a holocaust — a Greek word meaning sacrifice by fire — or The Holocaust, why are listening to Israel's ambassador the the UK comparing, favourably, the bombing of Gaza to that of Dresden?
Listen to the screams as people wait to see if their shelter is next to be hit.
Israel says it is dropping about 1,000 bombs per day on Gaza. In the past 24 hours the IDF says it destroyed over 320 “terror targets” across the Gaza Strip.
In a macabre parallel with concentration camp tattoos, children write their names on their arms so that they can be identified if they are killed.
These facts should give you pause. But many cheer on the destruction. It behooves us to ask why.
We cannot blame propaganda — although one suspects many people spout official propaganda precisely because it saves them from thinking for themselves.
To repeat what the television tells us, is to refuse to interrogate the narrative. It is the opposite of being informed.
That is why the longer I worked in the news business, the less I consumed it. As Otto von Bismark said: “Laws, like sausages, cease to inspire respect the more we know how they are made.”
The assault on Gaza re-opens the Israel question and thrusts it in front of the eyes of the millions who prefer not to look — and those in countries like Germany who are forbidden by law to do so.
Censorship goes so far that 100 Jewish writers and artists in Germany put their names to an open letter criticising the suppression of free speech: “To deny the right to public expressions of grief for lives lost in Gaza does not make Jews safe.”
This goes to the heart of the Gaza conflict. Governments always justify censorship and surveillance as “keeping us safe” — in truth, they mean themselves.
Heightened conflict will not make Jews or the State of Israel any safer, and Netanyahu and the world’s politicians who line up behind him know that.
Taboo
I understand that many people are not so interested in psychology. However its greatest exponent was Sigmund Freud and his background and milieu, and the age in which he lived, dying on the eve of war in 1939, informed his work.
The psychologist Howard F Stein argues that one purpose of history is to “replace the reality of the present and past with a defensive myth of the past.”
He acknowledges that to question “sacred historical orthodoxies” is taboo.
He goes on to ask: “What, in sanctifying the Holocaust, do Jews not want to know about that grim era?” [1]
“For the Jews, the term Holocaust does not simply denote a single catastrophic era in history, but is a grim metaphor for the meaning of Jewish history. The Holocaust lies at the heart of the Jewish experience of time itself. One is either anxiously awaiting persecution, experiencing persecution, recovering from it, or living in a period that is a temporary reprieve from it.
There is No Exit from history; there is No Respite.”
The author of “Judaism and the Group-Fantasy of Martyrdom: The Psycho-dynamic Paradox of Survival Through Persecution” writing in the 1980s, said Israelis often referred to Yasser Arafat as “a contemporary exterminationist-Hitler, the Palestine Liberation Organization (PLO) and El Fatah as Nazis, Brownshirts, SS, and the like. If past, present, and future merge into gauzy sameness, no authentic change can be expected.”
Israeli intelligence would finance Hamas in order to undermine the PLO — and it promptly transferred the Hitler epithet to its own creation. [2]
“... these together are unconscious provocations against the Arabs for the war of annihilation which Israelis not only expect but seek in order that the masochistic fantasy come true. Both in the Jewish religious tradition and in secular Israeli nationalism, any awaited-for redemption and resurrection will be heralded by a preceding era of unfathomable cataclysm and bereavement.”
Stein quotes The Guardian’s former foreign correspondent and foreign editor, Martin Woollacott, who died in 2021, as it being usual to see everywhere another impending disaster in world Jewry.
“These fears of inevitable death are not the product of lone voices, but the litany of Jewish tradition that traces biblically to the prophetic threat of imminent Yahwistic punishment for the commission of sins. But what sins?”
The sin, writes Stein, is the usurpation of the power of God, through the very act of man enforcing the claim to the land of Zion, which the Torah forbids.
“The orthodox Jewish belief awaits the return of the Moshiach or Messiah who will gather the Jews back into the Land of Israel, usher in an era of peace, build the Third Temple - and it seems to me that Zionism is the hand of man, not of God.”

It is also the negation of the truth that the Nazi experiment was not an example of “perpetually bad Germans who cannot help but be bad,” but an international project in which numerous countries, industrialists, social engineers and bankers were complicit — including Jews.
