"Nine-Eleven isn't our past. It's our future."
— Rebekah Roth, former flight attendant and author of Methodical Illusion (2014).
Sep 10, 2024
As I prepared an article for the Nine-Eleven anniversary it occurred to me that we miss the point when we focus on terrorism, whether the perpetrators were "foreign actors" or if it was an "inside job" by the State itself.
Nine-Eleven was not a terror event. It was social engineering. Just as the 20th century regimes in Russia, Germany and China were not grass roots revolutions. Their significance is less as ideologies than social experiments, on a continuum that links to the present.
Almost half the population was a child or not yet born when the World Trade Center in New York City was destroyed. They would grow up in a world were rappers talk about Illuminati, techies harp about transhumanism, and geneticists continue to dream of a master race.
Perhaps this cultural programming gets us closer to the purpose and function of Nine-Eleven than the "truthers," even though their exploration of nano thermite and computer generated imagery (CGI) was valuable in exposing the event.
Outward obeisance
Like Covid it was not the event that changed every aspect of life — economic, social, political and cultural — but the response, and our compliance.
There is external compliance and inward transformation. We may use politically correct language; force a smile; shuffle through airport scanners and pat downs — or walk six feet apart during Covid. It is called security theatre.
This was outward and performative. Yet it also affected us internally, modifying behaviour as surely as self censorship.
The police, once keepers of the peace, have been militarized and politicised — the vanguard of social engineers. Journalists, once citizens challenging power with a pen, have become propagandists who promote the official narrative. We saw during Covid how teachers, doctors and nurses became enforcers. Psychologists advised governments on how to manipulate the people, using fear to make them comply.
After Nine-Eleven the airwaves were blasted with propaganda, through TV series like Homeland and 24. Jack Bauer would hunt down a terrorist or group (almost always Arabs) injecting biological weapons into the public consciousness as an ever-present, invisible threat.
In a race against time he would resort to torture to prevent disaster — inverting reality, for even interrogators and counterterrorism experts say torture is ineffective.
What and why
How to explore the significance of September 11th, 2001 with relatives, friends and acquaintances who did not witness it?
First discuss what changed, and then why.
We are not avoiding the perpetrators by focusing on the response. One is a clue to the other. Cui bono, who benefits, helps identify the suspects. And if a government is lying, then it is complicit with those who carried it out. See tomorrow’s Nine-Eleven anniversary article, part two.
Each person may have their own memory of what made life more free in the 1980s or ‘90s, when the toppling of the Berlin Wall gave hope that a brotherhood of man might mean more than words (and you were not chastised for such words). Even politicians talked of a peace dividend from the end of the Cold War.
If you think that’s sentimental, look from the point of view of weapons manufacturers.
How the warmongers must have suffered in those days when the Cold War ended! But their dreams of riches came true on September 11th 2001 with the destruction of the World Trade Center, the launch of the War on Terror and the invasions of Afghanistan, Iraq and others that followed.
See how military spending was dipping again by 2013. Investors in Lockheed and Raytheon had no need to panic! The next year the Maidan coup put Ukraine on a path to war with Russia!
Follow the money. It always comes down to dollars and bullets or other shots.
